Varsity Baseball Vs. Lansing Recap

After being shacked up in the gym for weeks, the Trumansburg Varsity Baseball team returned to action on Friday, March 30th against their crosstown rivals, the Lansing Bobcats. Due to the recent weather, the game was located at Wells College on the turf facility. Despite the onslaught of pouring rain and brutal winds, both sides stuck it out on Friday morning and were able to get their season opener out of the way.

It was the usual scene for the Trumansburg team, with Scott Voorhees returning to the helm for his 24th season as Trumansburg Head Coach. Returning to his side was Coach Michael Flood, after taking a brief hiatus from the team last season. Many of the Trumansburg players this year have expressed their appreciation for Coach Flood, with many of them saying that his absence from the team last year “didn’t seem right”. The duo of Voorhees and Flood would lead their team against Lansing, seeking a win against the Bobcats for the first time in many years.

Taking the mound for Trumansburg would be junior Liam Reynolds. Reynolds was a pivotal part of last years team and displayed his dominance on the mound last year, where he pitched a no-hitter against Odessa-Montour. Reynolds went to work on the Lansing lineup with a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the first inning, after senior Jake Shelley drove in two runs with a single. Reynolds walked the lead off man, but settled in nicely. However, the score would be tied at the end of one, after a few errors served costly, with the Raiders handing 2 runs to the Bobcats. Before the game, Coach Flood told the trumansburg team that “the winner of the game would be the team that played the best defense”. This statement proved to be 100% accurate when the game concluded. Trumansburg and Lansing would go on to play 7 innings of back and forth baseball, with Lansing revailing 7-6. The difference between a Trumansburg win and a Trumansburg loss? Errors. Tallying up 6 total team errors as well as many additional blunders, the Blue Raiders beat themselves as they allowed Lansing back into the game repeatedly. The combined efforts of Trumansburg pitchers, Liam Reynolds and Jake Shelley finished the game with a combined 0 earned runs, yet Trumansburg ended up losing 7-6 in 7 innings. The Blue Raiders had no problem scoring runs, however, the entirety of Trumansburg hits came from the first four hitters in their lineup. Seniors Caleb Ladd and Owen Baird each had hits in the losing effort.

Up next for Trumansburg will be Lansing yet again on Monday, April 9th at home. Make sure you bundle up and come support the Raiders!
