(Boys Basketball) Trumansburg vs. Watkins Glen 12/12/17

After coming off of a tough series of losses to Southern Cayuga last Friday, the Trumansburg boys basketball teams were back in action on Tuesday night. Their opponent would be the Senecas from just down the road in Watkins Glen. The rivalry between these two teams has been heavily dominated by Trumansburg in recent years, but that domination would come to an end on Tuesday.

The JV team would find themselves in a back and forth fight with the Senecas, trading baskets for the entirety of the game. At the helm of the offensive threat would be the duo of Elijah Black and JJ Hopkins. Both Black and Hopkins were the main threats of scoring on offense, also

contributing a great deal on defense. Also joining the cause on offense was Tanner Potter and Dalton Ingraham, who proved to be vital to the Trumansburg attack, as they helped facilitate the movement of the ball, leading to scoring opportunities. The Trumansburg offensive would come up just short, as Watkins stole the game 49-46. Up next for Coach MacLean’s Trumansburg side will be Dryden on Friday. Make sure you come support the JV boys!

With senior Dalton Kenney out for with an undisclosed injury, the Trumansburg varsity team was depleted of one of their starting guards entering Tuesday night’s game against Watkins. The absence of Kenney would prove to undermine the success of Trumansburg, as they would get out to a sluggish start in the first quarter. Both teams would not be able to find an offensive for the first 10 minutes of the game as the score was 11-6 Watkins with just under 6 minutes left in the first half. Turnovers again corrupt the Trumansburg offense as they were unable to get any momentum until the very end of the first half where they score four straight buckets to pull within three points at the break. At the start of the third quarter, Watkins would go on a short five-point run and would not look back for the rest of the game. Watkins out-rebounded Trumansburg and scored a majority of their points on the fast break, tiring out Trumansburg. The Raiders were also having trouble getting the ball inside to the jolly giant Zeb Whitford, who was one of Trumansburg’s most effective sources of scoring.

After Tuesday’s loss, both the JV and Varsity teams have fallen to 0-3 on the year. Our boys basketball program will look to get back on track on Friday, as they take on Dryden at home. Make sure you come out and support these Trumansburg athletes!
