Success! Trumansburg Basketball recap 1/22-1/29

For the Trumansburg basketball community, success has not been abundant this year. It has been a year of frustrations but at the same time, a year of learning, as adaptations have been made in order to survive the long winter season. After weeks and months of hard work, the Trumansburg basketball community finally had a week where their hard work paid off, with all four high school teams (JV girls, JV boys, Varsity girls and Varsity boys) collecting much needed wins.

The girls JV team collected their third win last Monday, as they took dominated their rivals, the Lansing Bobcats. With a final score of 53-33, the Trumansburg team was outdoing the Bobcats in almost every single category and stat line. Leading the way for Trumansburg was sophomore Sarah Wertis, who proved to be the catalyst on the floor, as she put up a very impressive 19-point performance. Wertis also added in 8 rebounds and 4 steals, getting the job done on both ends of the court. Savannah Walden complimented Wertis’s outstanding play by adding 9 points and 4 steals of her own. It was a statement game for Trumansburg, as their play led them to their third win of the year.

On the varsity side of things, it was a monumental day for Russ Peterson’s team. “Last night’s game was indeed a special night. Not only was it our first win of the season but it was also Meredith Stilwell’s birthday. After nursing a pulled muscle in her left leg over a week and a half, she was ready for action” said Coach Peterson. Stilwell led the way for the varsity team on her birthday, as she was the leading scorer for the game with 12 points. Stilwell was not the only standout performer for Trumansburg, as two Mikula sisters, Mackenzie and Madison, combined for 19 points and 27 rebounds! Rounding out the impressive day was senior Hailey Wright who had 9 points and 4 rebounds. Congrats to the girls varsity team for securing their first win of the season, and a special Happy Birthday to Meredith Stilwell!

Coach Dan MacLean and his JV team secured a convincing win over Groton with the help of Sophomore Elijah Black who has been a consistent leader and scoring threat throughout the course of the season. I was unable to collect stats for the game, so I have no other information to share. I am working on trying to find a way to consistently receive stats, so sorry. The varsity boys team finally had a breakthrough against Groton, winning 54-44. Senior guard Dalton Kenney led the way, scoring sixteen points. Junior Zeb Whitford added 10 points, and junior Hudson Williamson added 8 points and 6 rebounds to the cause. With a group of frustrated individuals on the team, this win was greatly needed for morale on the team. The boys will look to close out the season against Lansing on February 9th at home, and February 12 away at Thomas A. Edison.
