The Running Raiders took to the track on Monday with their first dual meet of the season. It amounted to delayed gratification for the Tburg squad, as last week’s meet was cancelled due to inclement weather. Clearly it was worth the wait, as Trumansburg brought out the brooms and made a clean sweep, leveling the competition in a tour de force.
The Boys’ team, with Coach Neil DeRaiche at the helm, erupted for 112 points, besting Moravia by 77 points and Whitney Point by triple digits. Kicking things off for the team was the 3200 Meter Relay consisting of Noah Head, Sam Ives, Ben Haefner and Aiden Begeal who stormed their way to a time of 9:52, eclipsing their competitors by nearly a full moon. In the 110 Hurdles G.H. Wood claimed the top spot with a spot on 17 flat performance into a slight headwind. Next up was the 100 Meter Dash, where Tburg once again laid down the law, dismantling the field. Jack Murphy and Keegan Moore continued their friendly rivalry from the indoor season, posting 11.56 and 11.77 times respectively to secure first and second place for the Raiders. The 1600 was more of the same as Austin Voorhees sustained the theme of dominance, taking top honors with a time of 5:30. Trumansburg would not be denied when it came to the 400 Meter Relay, capturing primero with a blistering 45.44 seconds, a solid early season effort that bodes well for a sectional slot come June. In a relentless, unabating performance, Noah Head stayed aHEAD (a running joke!) of his victims in the 800 meter race, posting a time of 2:08. Not to be outdone, senior Gabe Pesco shut down the opposition in the 200 Meters with a very respectable 23.3 seconds. Rounding out the scoring in the running events, the 1600 meter relay team of G.H. Wood, Dominic Mikula, Kevin Lampman and fab frosh Ryan Ciccolini smote the competition, soundly thumping their counterparts by 47 seconds.
In the field events it was once again all Trumansburg. Zeb Whitford and Omar Godoy put the shot in excess of 34 feet to go 1-2, while Josiah Lopez soared to a personal best 20 feet in the long jump. Lopez earned his third “W” of the day in the triple jump, hop-skipping his way to the tune of 41 feet, 2 inches, thus closing the scoring for the Blue Raiders.
On the Girls side of things, the Lady Raiders exceeded all expectations (and the boys score!) by posting a 119 to lead the way in Monday’s Tri-meet. The freshmen fab four of Ginny Clifford, Evelyn VanNess, Kaitlyn Feely and Molly MacQueen ripped it up with an impressive 11:09.5 in the 3200 Meter Relay. When pressed by the press for a quote on their success, Feely responded, “We were just really excited about our first varsity track meet.” Feely’s cohort and relay partner Ginny Clifford, had this to add, “We’re fast.” Finley Edmonds, sophomore superstar, took flight in both in the 100 and 200 Meters, cruising to the top spot in each. The 1500 held very little in the way of suspense as Trumansburg’s Molly MacQueen asserted herself, circling the oval to the tune of 5:14 with Kaitlyn Feely floating in shortly thereafter.
There are certain famous groups of four that just click. Some examples include The Beatles, the Incredibles, and the Mean Girls. Joining this popular list is the 400 Meter Relay team, which includes Morgan Corliss, Finley Edmonds, Hannah Morpurgo, and Taylor Miller. Their combination of grit and speed give them a key victory, running a 54.97, vanquishing their foes.
Few individuals have the opportunity to win the “hat-trick” for jumping events. This illustrious title includes a win in the High jump, Triple jump, and Long jump, which is exactly what Sydney Preston was able to do, triumphantly claiming first place in all three events by leaps and bounds.
Ginny Clifford took the lead early in the 800 Meters, then lost it, then staked her claim with authority in the backstretch, holding off Madison Becker of Moravia fame by a scant three seconds.
Not quite a shot in the dark, Trumansburg captured two more event victories in shot put and discus. Senior Olivia Murray had a personal record in discus, throwing 68’ 03”, outdoing the rest of the field. Murray also finished second in the shot put, finishing closely behind teammate Taylor Miller who put 26’ 04”, capturing the top spot.
