Trumansburg Baseball: Week One Wrap-Up

After four weeks of practice indoors, the Trumansburg baseball teams finally were able to get back on the diamond for a chance to beat long time rivals, the Lansing Bobcats.

Jason Hodge and his young JV team were at home to start their campaign, losing by a score of 12-7. On the mound was sophomore Kameron Lincoln who pitched three innings against the Bobcats giving up no earned runs and no walks. This is something that head coach Jason Hodge likes to see, as walks tend to difficult the flow of the game as a pitcher. Lincoln not only contributed on the mound, but at the plate as well, as he went 3-4 with a walk and 3 runs batted in. Also contributing on the offensive end was Hudson Williamson and Jack Lincoln, who added a combined 6 hits and 4 runs batted in. Jack Lincoln also pitched the last 4 innings of the game, showing off his reliable arm. In this tough game, the Raiders may not have had the outcome that they wanted, but the pieces for a successful season are there.

For varsity, opening up their season meant coming out of the gates and running into a colossal opponent in the Lansing Bobcats. On the bump for the Raiders was junior Jake Shelley, who had trouble finding the strike zone all night long, as he ended up with six walks and a hit batsman. He did only let in one run over the 5 1/3 innings he pitched, coming on a pass ball with the bases loaded in the 4th inning. Shelley had 7 strikeouts on the day and gave up two hits in the losing effort. Jack English came in for relief, and after a couple of walks and a single, the Raiders found themselves down 4-1. The only Trumansburg run came from the legs of Hunter Sherwood, who had a great day at the plate, going 2-4 and getting on base for the Raiders alongside Caleb Ladd who also finished 2-4. Sophomore Liam Reynolds had the Raider's only run batted in, coming off an opposite field roundball single. The Raiders team was aggressive, but did not use the small strike zone given by the umpire to their advantage. Swinging at pitches out of the zone, rolling over pitches and creating easy outs, the Raiders made it easy for the Lansing pitching staff to work effectively and quickly. Coach Voorhees said that "a few mistakes in the game" led to a Raiders defeat, but he is also excited at the fact that the team is back outside and playing games.
