In recent years, the Trumansburg-Watkins Glen rivalry has been a big one for basketball, and Tuesday night was no exception to the heated matchup.
Our Raiders journeyed down to the Glen to take on the Senecas, and captured a big road win.
The JV team got off to a hot start, under Josiah Lopez, but turnovers plagued Coach Meyers and his team as the JV squadron ended up losing on Tuesday night.
On the varsity side of things, the Raiders got off to a slow start, but eventually got the offense warmed up and separated themselves from the Watkins team. Austin Grunder led all scoring with 27 points and 11 rebounds, as he took the ball to the hoop countless amounts of times, drawing foul after foul. Grunder was a perfect 9 for 9 from the free throw line, propelling his team to a victory. Luke Richards also added 10 points, hitting a couple very important threes. Richards and Dalton Kenney seem to hit big time shots from behind the arc when the Raiders are in need of a score. Not only was the Raider offense clicking, but the defense was stellar as well, as the 2-3 defense stifled oncoming Watkins Glen attacks. The final score 60-49, Trumansburg.
Momentum is a huge word associated with the game of basketball. When a team has momentum, it seems as if they are unstoppable, a force that cannot be slowed. One thing is for sure, momentum was in the Trumansburg favor on Friday night. Both the JV and Varsity teams were amped up before their battles. The JV team (searching for their first win) was one step ahead of Dryden the entire game, displaying stellar defense and control on offense. The offensive trio of Kam Lincoln, Josiah Lopez and Jack Lincoln accounted for 46 of the teams 62 points.
In recent years, the Trumansburg-Dryden matchup has been very even, with both teams never dominating one another. This was not the case this year, as Trumansburg tamed the Purple Lions with ease. Austin Grunder led all scoring with 36 points. Grunder contributed 5 assists as well, and snatched 12 rebounds. Jake Shelley helped trounce the Dryden side by laying down 21 points of his own. Andrew Stewart played the role of facilitator, as he shelled out 8 assists and added 8 points to the Raider cause. The energy that both the JV and Varsity team played with is something that spectators have not seen all year, and hope that it continues.
